Authentic Andean Experiences with Yachay Travel
The owner of this company is from the Paru Paru Community, where he continues to honor and maintain his membership. His first language was Quechua, and he did not speak Spanish until high school. The move to the city was a difficult transition, but he embraced the experience, studying at an institute and earning a degree in tourism. He began leading treks in 2011, gaining invaluable experience with several companies along the way.
Manuel’s journey to becoming a tour guide was shaped by a series of meaningful experiences. When he was around 10 years old, he met a hiker near his home who was trying to find his way to Puma Cocha. Understanding only the words “Puma Cocha,” Manuel took it upon himself to guide the hiker to their destination. On another occasion, he invited his volunteer English teachers to visit his village and stay overnight at his family’s home. His passion for connecting with people from all walks of life, along with his love for sharing his culture, continues to inspire him today.
This same spirit of connection, tradition, and reverence for the natural world lives at the heart of our company. It’s reflected not only in the journeys we lead, but in the very symbols we’ve chosen to represent us.
In our logo, we’ve incorporated powerful elements of Andean belief. The sacred coca leaves represent life and balance, offering respect to Pachamama (Mother Earth). The Apu—our revered mountains—serve as protectors and spiritual guides, embodying strength and wisdom passed down through generations. The sun, a central deity in Andean spirituality, symbolizes vitality, enlightenment, and divine guidance. The Y’s in “Yachay” are shaped as the Andean cross, a symbol of the four cardinal directions, unity, and the interconnectedness of all living things.
“Yachay,” the Quechua word for “learning,” reflects our belief that knowledge is a journey—one that begins in childhood and grows through every encounter, every path walked. We see ourselves as guides on this path of discovery, eager to teach not only about the Andean civilization, but about its deep connection to the natural world, history, culture, and the sacred energies that surround us all. Just as Manuel’s earliest steps into guiding were shaped by curiosity, kindness, and cultural pride, our work is rooted in those same values. With each trek, we carry forward the traditions of our ancestors and the wisdom of the Apus, sharing them with respect, joy, and the spirit of Yachay.
